Is It Time to Declutter Your Content?
When the American Public Power Association (APPA) redesigned its website two years ago, it found it had a ton of outdated content that had been saved for a very long time, AssociationSuccess.org notes. In fact, the association had an archive of its newsletters dating back four decades. Meena Dayak, APPA's vice president of Integrated Media and Communications, performed a content audit and made a big decision: "If it was more than two years old, it had to go." Dayak states, "Even if it was valuable, [the older content] was keeping the newer stuff from popping up in search." Courtney Reyers, senior manager for digital strategy at the American Society for Microbiology, also tackled a website overhaul at her organization. She started with 20,000 untagged, unstructured pages and pared it down to 900 pages. Reyers concludes, "If you don't keep hold of your content, this is what's going to happen to you. Go clean your room, right?"
